EP 01 // RELEASED VIA FLYER CLUB RECORDS

IN THE WORDS OF RULITOS:

While the songs on this release vary in style, they all originated in the same place: sitting crisscross applesauce on the living room floor of a smoky one-bedroom at the edge of Hyde Park, whisper-singing to not wake the neighbors. I had just moved in with my girlfriend – my first time cohabitating. Funny what ends up feeling romantic, or what you end up missing. We took turns sitting in our one comfy chair (we had zero furniture for a long while). Fixing up and installing an old washer/dryer once late night trips to the laundromat lost their charm. Arguing over our first few shared grocery trips. Friday night frozen pizzas!
Anyway, those were the little bits that prompted me to try songwriting again. I probably told my girlfriend that it was just to pass the time – we were too broke to do much outside the house on the weekends – but deep down, if you really pressed me, I’d admit that this is what I wanted to do. Music. Songwriting. All my prior music work was very collaborative, whereas this is just me.
So, long story short: all the songs come from that living room floor, sitting crisscross applesauce, piecing together what making music for me really sounds and feels like for the first time.

MUSIC FOR FILM & VIDEO

BICYCLE | SHORT FILM | 2022 | FULL ORIGINAL SCORE

Directed by Adam Brandenburg, this short follows twin brothers on their final road trip together, where one cares for the other as he succumbs to a terminal illness.

Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Memo Guerra at United Oscillations of America Studios, the soundtrack features original synth and programming work, acoustic and nylon string guitar, and a collaboration with an Austin Symphony viola player.

The score attempts to capture the tension and fear of isolation amidst the infinite — be it stranded in the desert, on the brink of the afterlife, or biking against traffic on the only two-lane road visible for miles.

DANCE COMPOSITIONS

After a successful collaboration the year prior, Shakti Moves Dance Company director Erica Santiago asked to amend the original composition she had commissioned to extend her choreography. Inspired by an array of nature sounds and textures she self-recorded, the composition blends Santiago’s field recordings with electronic and traditional instrumentation, culminating in a sweeping crescendo that pushes the choreography to a breaking point, then dropping off in an instant, like the ocean waves Santiago aspired to emulate.

SHAKTI MOVES DANCE COMPANY | CLOSING FEATURE - 2024 SEASON

Shakti Moves Dance Company director Erica Santiago reached out with an odd request: I need a dance score written in reverse. Rather than work to completed music, Santiago built her dance first, and needed a score to fit into specific time cues and choreography. Despite the unique challenge, the score came together quickly, leaning heavily on a looped low-end synth bass and various other keyboard instruments. The piece was recommissioned the following year for the 2024 season with a similar “choreography-first” approach.
